Done with Diabetes is an Illinois-based Not For Profit corporation that received 501(c)(3) status in 2019.
Our objectives are to:
- Fund research toward a cure
- Provide diabetes education
Our Story
Hi! I’m Susie. In 2013, while I was running a 120-mile ultramarathon, I started experiencing strange symptoms. I completed the race – but afterward I felt so sick I went straight to the ER to make sure I didn’t have a pulmonary embolism. To everyone’s surprise, it was discovered that I had diabetes.
At first it was suspected I had Type 1. When I tested negative for autoimmune antibodies (a key marker for Type 1), it was assumed I had Type 2, and I began treatment. At the same time, I was diagnosed with mild-moderate diabetic retinopathy.
Treatment for Type 2 diabetes made me very sick and I simply didn’t respond to the treatment. By 2016, my diabetes was out of control and my eye disease had progressed to severe diabetic retinopathy with macular edema. I was going blind…
